Demonstration Housing Project (DHP) at Bhubaneswar, Odisha

In response to proposal of the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs, Govt. of India to partner the Demonstration Housing Project in the State, the Housing & Urban Development Department, Government of Odisha indicated interest and thereafter Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) allotted 0.43 acres land for construction of Demonstration Houses by BMTPC with PREFABRICATED SANDWICH PANEL SYSTEM - Reinforced Expanded Polystyrene sheet core with sprayed concrete as wall & slab at Chandrashekharpur, Bhubaneshwar, Odisha. The plan, sections, layout plan of Demonstration Housing Project was finalised in discussion with Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA). BMTPC has completed construction of 32 Demonstration Houses (G+3) using Expanded Polystyrene Core Panel System (EPS) Technology.

Besides Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), the other Partnering & Funding agencies for the project are Department For International Development (DFID) & National Housing Bank (NHB). DFID and NHB is working on “Making affordable housing market work for faster & sustained economic growth” in eight identified low income States in India and one of the strategies is to test innovative technologies and approaches for Green construction. Under this strategy, NHB and DFID have become partners with BMTPC in demonstration housing project implemented in Odisha and provided partial financial support.

The project also includes on-site infrastructure work such as construction of pathways, boundary wall, water supply work, horticulture work, drainage & disposal and external electrification using solar panels etc.

The details of the project are as follows:

Project Profile

  • No. of houses   :   32(G+3)
  • Carpet area of each unit   :   23.97 sqm.
  • Built up area of each unit including common area   :   34.10 sqm.
  • Total built up area under the project is 11,782 sq.ft.
  • Technology: PREFABRICATED SANDWICH PANEL SYSTEM - Reinforced Expanded Polystyrene sheet core with sprayed concrete
  • Each Unit consists of One living room, one bedroom, cooking space, Bath and WC.
  • Includes Earthquake Resistant Features.

About the Technology

Reinforced Expanded Polystyrene Core (EPC) Panel System is a factory produced panel system for the construction of low rise buildings upto G+3 and as filler walls in high rise RCC and steel frame buildings. In this technique, a core of undulated polystyrene is covered with interconnected zinc coated welded wire mesh on both sided reinforcement and shortcrete concrete.

The panels are finished on site by pouring concrete (double panel, floors and stairs) and spraying concrete to realise the different elements of the system such as Vertical Structural Walls, Horizontal Structural elements, Cladding elements, etc.
